Last Saturday, the South Alabama Jaguars volleyball team hosted the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks at the Jag Gym. They played in two different four-set matches, both ending in a Jaguar defeat.

In the hard-fought second set, the Jags lost 25-20 as they attempted to come back in a swinging rally from behind in the third set. The Jags fought hard and made a comeback in the third set but eventually, some of their errors caught up with them in the fourth set.

Jaguar sophomore outside hitter Hannah Maddux dominated on the court with 17 kills and 3 Service Aces against the Ladyjacks, resulting in a total of 20 points in the second match. Last season, Maddux played in 22 matches with two starters as she accounted for 46 kills and two service aces. She is already establishing herself as a talented offensive player. Setter Maddie Soboleski had a total of 29 assists and racked up seven kills against the Ladyjacks defense.

The Jags played hard but made some critical mistakes with twice as many serving errors as Stephen F. Austin and only half as many serving aces. The Jags also had 27 attack errors to the Ladyjacks’ 18. This hurt South Alabama significantly in the first and fourth sets.

The Jaguars (0-4) will host their in-state rivals in the Troy Trojans (3-0 in Sun Belt Conference play) this Thursday and Friday, both matches at the Jaguar gym at 6 p.m. Central.
