It is that time of year again, where the streets of Mobile are crowded with excited locals wearing purple, green and gold attire celebrating the Mardi Gras season, and what is a Mardis Gras season without a mask to go along with the festivities?
On Feb. 19, the South Alabama Bookstore hosted its second-annual Mardi Gras mask painting contest with a grand prize of a $25 gift card to the store.
Students gathered around a table and chatted over music while decorating their masks. Paint of all colors, glitter, and beads was provided for students to use their imagination and create art on their mask of choice.
When students’ creativity ran out, they were asked to take a picture of their mask, so they could be voted on.
The South Alabama Bookstore took to social media to choose the winner of the mask decorating contest, posting each mask to the official bookstore Instagram account.
Freshman Kimberly Lim won the contest against seven other masks. She chose a black, white and gold theme for her friend to wear at a masquerade party, which led her to win the contest.
“It was honestly relaxing just being able to sit down and paint,” Lim said. “I didn’t expect people to like mine so much when there were others who had painted just as well as I did.”
Lim plans to use the prize money for more folders and pens.
Senior Hannah Lyner, USA Bookstore event planner and cashier, shared the event was a fun way to get students involved and to thank them for being loyal.
“It is stress relieving, and it is something fun to do to take your mind off things,” Lyner said.
