On Thursday, Sept. 26, Doctors Without Borders speaker Dr. Ryan Winters gave a presentation at the Student Center Terrace. He is a physician and craniofacial surgeon based out of New Orleans. Dr. Winters works with several humanitarian including Doctors without Borders.
The event was hosted by the International Studies Global Health Speaker Series and was attended by about 50 students and faculty.
Dr. Winters spoke about the different types of relief work and what to expect on the job. He went into detail about his own experience with different organizations he was a part of, such as Fondation le Bon Samaritain and Doctors Without Borders.
A large portion of his presentation was about the different challenges he faced during relief work, such as the time he was in Haiti when the government collapsed. He also went into detail about how to stay safe on the job.
“This is just one of those things I’ve always been interested in doing,” said Dr. Winters about why he chose to do relief work.
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, was founded in 1968. As stated on their website, the organization’s principles are neutrality, impartiality, and independence. MSF’s commitment to these principles ensures that they can help the people who are most in need regardless of politics, funding, or the media.
Since working with MSF, Dr. Winters has volunteered in Haiti, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, and India.
