South Alabama held the First Generation Meet & Greet, an event that is designed for students to meet other people who are also first-generation students and connect with them on campus.
The event featured a brief introduction by Kristi Clayton, Coordinator of Student Academic Success. Dr. Krista Harrell, Title XI Coordinator and Associate Dean of Students gave a personal speech about her experience as a first-generation student. Students were encouraged to network and introduce themselves so they could meet other first-generation students.
“It’s really interesting and it’s good to know you’re not alone in what you’re doing and that you’re not the only one that’s facing some of the differences from people who have parents who went to college,” said Brianna Pate, a first-generation college student.
A sign-in sheet and information table for first-gen students was present to get connected and involved on campus, as well as representatives from the Office of International Education. Desserts and refreshments were also provided.
This event connected students of similar backgrounds, creating a community within the campus.
