Despite redshirt sophomore Savannah Jones’ absence on the court, USA pushed through with a 12-point win over no. 10 Louisiana-Lafayette. Alexis Sykes started the game with a successful three-pointer and finished the game with a total of 15 points on the scoreboard.
Jones was suspended indefinitely for violation of team rules. Kennedi Centers was also suspended for violation of team rules on the same weekend, but was only suspended for one game. Jones will continue to sit the remainder of the Sun Belt Tournament out, according to John Durgee, USA strategic communication assistant.
Jones stats and accolades prove she is vital member of the USA’s basketball team and her absence could prove troubling as the Jaguars continue to move forward in the tournament. Jones was named Sun Belt player of the week in February and is only the “second Jaguar woman to earn the honor” of being named the Sunbelt 2017-18 Sunbelt Freshman of the Year, according to USAJaguars. Jones also leads the USA women’s basketball team in scoring and in three-point shots as of March 11.
Following the momentous win, USA is slated to play no. 6 Texas State tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.
