The South Alabama women’s basketball team’s hot streak continued with an 80-77 win over their in-state rival, Troy.
This game was the first time the Jags had faced the Trojans, since Troy knocked the Jags out of last years Sun Belt Conference Tournament where, a fourth-quarter rally by the Jags fell short as they missed three consecutive three-point shots in the closing seconds.
This time the Jags were determined not to fall short, with red-shirt junior Savannah Jones leading the way. Jones posted a monster performance playing 37 minutes, hitting four of her seven three-point shots, hitting the final free throw that sealed the game and scoring 31 total points.
Jones wasn’t the only Jag who excelled in the rivalry match, sophomore forward Kennedi Centers grabbed five rebounds and took a beating while drawing six charges in the game.
“That’s what she does,” Head coach Terry Fowler said of Center’s play. “She is a charge taker, she’s a momentum breaker. She can dominate the game without scoring a point. The energy on the defensive end of the floor and all our players know that she has their back.
The win over Troy is the Jags’ fifth straight in-conference win and moves the Jags to 17-3 on the year, and with nine regular-season games left the Jags are in a position to potentially post one of the best records in team history.
The Jags now plan to hit the road for rematches against Arkansas State and Arkansas-Little Rock.
